Follow the Medway through town
The river gives Maidstone a different perspective from the shopping streets. Paths connect stretches of the waterfront with views towards the town’s older buildings, including All Saints Church and the Archbishops’ Palace. Choose a shorter town walk or look at a longer route towards Allington or East Farleigh.
Boat trips offer another way to see the Medway, with the Kentish Lady among the local operators. Trips, boarding points and seasonal schedules vary, so use the operator’s own information when planning a journey rather than assuming boats run whenever the riverside is busy.
Make time for Mote Park and the museum
Mote Park combines open parkland, a lake and walking routes close to the town. It can suit a simple stroll or a longer outdoor visit, with individual activities and facilities operating under their own arrangements. Check access information for the part of the park you intend to use.
Maidstone Museum brings collections and changing exhibitions together in the former Chillington Manor. The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regimental Museum is within the main museum, while the Carriage Museum is a separate site. Check each museum’s current access and opening information before trying to combine visits.
A performance or a day beyond the centre
The Hazlitt Theatre on Earl Street hosts drama, comedy, music and family productions. A performance pairs naturally with a meal in the town centre. Our What’s On guide picks out dated local events and links directly to organisers for bookings and the latest details.
Kent Life at Sandling and Leeds Castle near Broomfield offer different days out in the wider Maidstone area. Neither is in the central shopping streets, so allow for the journey and use the attraction’s own visitor information to plan tickets, activities and access.
